Youth Committee Member Runs Lisburn 10K for ADD-NI

Royce put his best foot forward in the Lisburn 10K Run for ADD-NI, Northern Ireland’s leading charity for children and young people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) based in Eglantine Avenue, South Belfast.

Royce is a young person who lives with AD/HD and understands the benefits of the intervention and support offered by ADD-NI to young people.  Royce attented the centre, talked to staff and felt he was understood.

Armed with an appreciation of what ADD-NI offers to those who live with AD/HD, Royce believed that his efforts would raise funds for the charity - a cause close to his heart.  On completing the race he was delighted to have made it to the end and to have raised vital funds for ADD-NI.

"Unless you are a young person living with AD/HD, I don’t believe people have an understanding of what it is like.  Most people see the behaviour and not the person.  Sometimes you can feel alone but when I contacted ADD-NI and went to visit them at the centre, I felt immediately understood - it was as if someone switched on a light and knew exactly how I felt," said Royce.

"I can safely say that ADD-NI changed my life and that is why I want to take part in the Lisburn 10K and raise money for this very worthy cause," he added.

Director of ADD-NI, Sarah Salters, is delighted that Royce completed the Lisburn 10K race for the charity.

"I am delighted that Royce took part in the Lisburn 10K event for our organisation," said Sarah.

"AD/HD is an internationally recognised medical condition affecting at least 5-10% of school age children - in Northern Ireland this equates to 15,000 - 20,000 young people.  With on-going cutbacks in the health service, interventions for those with AD/HD post diagnosis are practically non-existent.  ADD-NI is one of the only specialised services in Northern Ireland for families to turn to.  In the current economic climate, survival is an on-going battle and therefore any funds we receive are greatly appreciated and I am really proud of Royce in his effort," she added.
