Crumlin Spin-a-thon group raise essential funds for children’s charity ADD-NI

Members of Crumlin Spin-a-thon group have held a number of spin-a-thons for charity over the past number of years. This year they have chosen to raise money for ADD-NI Children‘s Charity. Spin class attendees gave it their all to raise an impressive £825.

One of the members Kieran Braizer believes ADD-NI is a very worthy cause:

“We have a very dedicated membership at the spin class in Crumlin Community Centre and enjoy the challenge of a spin-a-thon. Not only does it keep us fit, but the money raised will go towards improving the lives of young people with AD/HD in Northern Ireland. AD/HD affects 5-10% of our school children population, which is a very large number for such a small area. ADD-NI is the only charity I know of that is providing effective services for these young people post diagnosis, so any fundraising that we could do for the Children’s Charity will be put to instant use”.

Sarah Salters, Director was delighted to learn that Kieran & members of the spinning group had chosen ADD-NI as their charity for this year’s spin-a-thon:

“ADD-NI is continuously trying to source funding to support our service provision and we are delighted that Crumlin Spin-a-thon group have chosen us as their charity for
2011. AD/HD affects at least 30,000 young people in Northern Ireland, yet children with the condition and their families are struggling to manage the characteristics of AD/HD with little or no assistance. ADD-NI addresses the prevalent issues of inequality which are common to this condition. We also help young people to understand their condition and give strategies to live with it, but essentially, to embrace the many positive qualities of having AD/HD.

We evaluate all the programmes that are ran in the centre and feedback from young people who complete the programme highlighted that they wanted to remain in contact with ADD-NI and come back to the centre on a regular basis. In direct response to this we have refurbished premises to provide Post Programme Support services for adolescents who continue to need help & support. All funds generated through Kieran and the team’s efforts will go towards this project which we and the young people are very grateful for”.

The Spin classes are held three times a week in the Community Centre and are facilitated by Gary Sweeney. Thanks are also extended to him for preparing additional spin training and a providing a tailored diet to ensure the participants were in peak condition for the event.

Gary commented “It was great fun to hold a charity spin-a-thon again this year. It is a real challenge for everyone taking part and a great way to keep in shape as well as raising much needed funds for the children’s charity. Spinning is an aerobic exercise that takes place on a specially designed stationary bicycle that allows each rider to control the tension and speed. We spin to music that motivates us to get into a focused work-out helping you to tone your quads, outer thigh muscles, abs, buttocks and arms. And although you follow the general callouts of when to speed up, or slow down, you are always in control. All levels are very welcome to come along and join a class, from beginners to others who might not have been on a bike for 10 years you are all very welcome. It is also a great way to meet new people, burn off any extra pounds from Christmas, have fun & improve your overall sense of well-being”.

Enquires for the spinning classes can be made to Gary on 07765 874980. Classes are held on Monday & Wednesday 7.30-8.30pm and Friday 6.30-7.30pm.
